Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon sweet cream unsalted butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon roasted garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon flaky sea salt
  • 1/4 cup filtered water
  • 1 large crown of fresh broccoli

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Broccoli
  1. Start by washing the broccoli thoroughly. Remove any tough stems. You want the florets to be small enough for even cooking.
Step 2: Arrange in a Microwave-Safe Bowl
  1. Place the broccoli florets in a microwave-safe bowl. Make sure the bowl is large enough to allow the steam to circulate.
Step 3: Add Water
  1. Pour in 1/4 cup of filtered water. This step is crucial. The water creates steam, making the broccoli tender and ensuring it doesn’t dry out.
Step 4: Season the Broccoli
  1. Now, sprinkle in the onion powder, garlic powder, and flaky sea salt. Toss lightly to make sure all florets get coated, then add your butter.
Step 5: Cover
  1. Cover the bowl with a microwave-safe lid or plate. This keeps the steam contained and allows the broccoli to cook evenly.
Step 6: Microwave
  1. Pop the bowl in the microwave. Cook on high for about 3 to 4 minutes. The exact time can vary based on your microwave’s wattage. Check after three minutes; if the broccoli isn’t bright green and fork-tender, continue heating in short increments.
Step 7: Add Lemon and Olive Oil
  1. Once the broccoli is cooked, carefully remove the bowl (watch out for steam!). Drizzle with lemon juice and olive oil, then give it another gentle toss.
Step 8: Taste Test
  1. Sample a floret. Adjust seasoning if necessary; sometimes, a bit more lemon juice or salt is all you need.

Notes

  • Use Fresh Broccoli: Fresh florets give the best flavor and texture. Avoid wilted or yellowing broccoli.
  • Don’t Overcook: Keep an eye on the clock. Overcooked broccoli loses its vibrant color and crunch.
  • Experiment with Seasonings: Swap garlic powder for crushed red pepper for a kick or add nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor.
  • Add Nuts: Toss in some toasted almonds or walnuts after cooking. They add a nice crunch.
Consider Meal Prep: You can prep broccoli in advance and microwave it right before serving for a quick meal.
